Description

Traharta House & Cottage occupies one of the most enviable waterfront positions on the West Cork coastline. This shorefront property is elevated above sea level and set amidst wonderfully private grounds of circa 1 acre.

In an idyllic and tranquil setting, tucked away at the end of a minor public road, with views to Horse Island and adjacent to Muir Cheilteach beach. The grounds are mainly laid out in lawn with mature trees, shrubs and a generous parking area. Access to the shoreline is provided via steps to the front of the property.

Traharta House measures approx. 139 sq m (1,500 sq ft) with accommodation consisting of dining/living room, kitchen, pantry, airing cupboard, housekeeping room, three bedrooms, shower room, bathroom and master ensuite shower room, all located on the upper floor. Underneath, accessed by spiral staircase, is a garage (c. 23 sq m) and utility room, plumbed for washer/dryer.

The residence was designed by architect Edward Samuels in a classic Bauhaus style and featured in a 1968 edition of Homes and Gardens. Bauhaus architecture characteristics include functional and abstract shapes used sparingly for decor, simple colour schemes, holistic design with basic industrial materials like concrete, steel and glass. The simplicity of design, with all the principal rooms having independent access onto a south-facing sun terrace running the whole length of the house taking full advantage of the glorious coastal vista. A second more sheltered West facing patio adjacent to the living space is ideal for evening BBQ's. There is an added advantage of a rooftop gallery where one can sit and enjoy the long summer evenings whilst admiring the passing seafaring vessels going to and from Castlehaven harbour.

The adjacent detached Traharta Cottage is a most charming quintessential West Cork cottage. Measuring approx. 65 sq m (700 sq ft), accommodation consists of two bedrooms, shower room and utility room on the ground floor with open plan kitchen/living/dining on the first floor. Originally dating from the 18th century, it is in good condition having recently been refurbished. During the renovations, the former hayloft was converted into the stunning bright and airy open plan kitchen/living/dining room, ensuring that the best views are enjoyed from this space. The original exterior stone stairs were retained. The cottage also has its own secluded patio which is incredibly sheltered and very private.

In 2019, both properties underwent a significant upgrade, including but not limited to new plumbing, energy efficient central heating/hot water systems, extensive insulation and high thermal efficiency windows & doors.

Traharta is a most sought-after location only a few kilometres from Castletownshend village. Castletownshend is a highly evocative place, a unique picturesque coastal period village. It is renowned as an international sailing and water sports centre and boasts of two restaurants, two pubs and a shop.

Further along the Wild Atlantic Way, Skibbereen (c. 10 km) is a vibrant market town servicing a large area from Rosscarbery to the Mizen Head and the inhabited islands of Roaring Water Bay. It has a number of excellent shops, supermarkets, a thriving country market and restaurants. There is also a digital hub 'Ludgate' with the benefit of 1GB connectivity which provides hot desks for individuals, start-ups or established companies.

West Cork attracts a very cosmopolitan population, with many renowned artists and writers residing in the area. It offers a variety of leisure opportunities and sporting facilities together with a peaceful pace of life. The coastline is dotted with many small secluded sandy beaches and a number of blue flag beaches, including nearby Tragumna and also at Inchydoney, Rosscarbery & Barleycove. The area provides some of the finest sailing along the entire south coast, whilst golf is catered for at Skibbereen, Clonakilty and Bantry. There is excellent fishing by arrangement on the Rivers Ilen, Argideen and Bandon. There are also numerous fine eating establishments around West Cork, two with Michelin star status. The property is approximately 90 mins drive from Cork airport.

Enjoying a waterfront position and an unrivalled aspect of one of the most stunning vistas on the West Cork coastline, where on a clear day you can see as far as Galley Head, Traharta House & Cottage is a wonderful and rare offering to the market.

    Ireland, Co Cork
    Castletownshend
    Traharta House & Cottage, Castlehaven
Ireland (Irish: Éire [ˈeːɾʲə] (About this soundlisten)), also known as the Republic of Ireland (Poblacht na hÉireann), is a country in north-western Europe occupying 26 of 32 counties of the island of Ireland. The capital and largest city is Dublin, which is located on the eastern side of the island. Around 40% of the country's population of 4.9 million people resides in the Greater Dublin Area. The sovereign state shares its only land border with Northern Ireland which is part of the United Kingdom. It is otherwise surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with the Celtic Sea to the south, St George's Channel to the south-east, and the Irish Sea to the east. It is a unitary, parliamentary republic. The legislature, the Oireachtas, consists of a lower house, Dáil Éireann, an upper house, Seanad Éireann, and an elected President (Uachtarán) who serves as the largely ceremonial head of state, but with some important powers and duties. The head of government is the Taoiseach (Prime Minister, literally 'Chief', a title not used in English), who is elected by the Dáil and appointed by the President; the Taoiseach in turn appoints other government ministers. The state was created as the Irish Free State in 1922 as a result of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. It had the status of Dominion until 1937 when a new constitution was adopted, in which the state was named "Ireland" and effectively became a republic, with an elected non-executive president as head of state. It was officially declared a republic in 1949, following the Republic of Ireland Act 1948. Ireland became a member of the United Nations in December 1955. It joined the European Economic Community (EEC), the predecessor of the European Union, in 1973. The state had no formal relations with Northern Ireland for most of the twentieth century, but during the 1980s and 1990s the British and Irish governments worked with the Northern Ireland parties towards a resolution to "the Troubles". Since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998, the Irish government and Northern Ireland Executive have co-operated on a number of policy areas under the North/South Ministerial Council created by the Agreement. Ireland ranks among the top ten wealthiest countries in the world in terms of GDP per capita, and as the tenth most prosperous country in the world according to The Legatum Prosperity Index 2015. After joining the EEC, Ireland enacted a series of liberal economic policies that resulted in rapid economic growth. The country achieved considerable prosperity between the years of 1995 and 2007, which became known as the Celtic Tiger period. This was halted by an unprecedented financial crisis that began in 2008, in conjunction with the concurrent global economic crash. However, as the Irish economy was the fastest growing in the EU in 2015, Ireland is again quickly ascending league tables comparing wealth and prosperity internationally. For example, in 2019, Ireland was ranked third most developed country in the world by the United Nations Human Development Index. It also performs well in several national performance metrics, including freedom of the press, economic freedom and civil liberties. Ireland is a member of the European Union and is a founding member of the Council of Europe and the OECD. The Irish government has followed a policy of military neutrality through non-alignment since immediately prior to World War II and the country is consequently not a member of NATO, although it is a member of Partnership for Peace and aspects of PESCO.
